Google is an a great search engine but here are others that are safe, age appropriate and may meet the needs of your students.
Sweet Search http://www.sweetsearch.com/ is a Google search engine specifically designed for students with filters to help prevent inappropriate results or images.
MOREnet http://search.more.net/ provides our students with a wonderful data base of full text, popular magazines, reference materials, primary resource and media.
Ask Kids: www.askkids.com is designed for elementary students and is especially good for image searching.
KIDREX: www.kidrex.org is prefect for primary students. It combines Google’s safe mode with a selected filtering of keywords and phrases.
Kids Click: www.kidsclick.org was created by librarians for kids. You can search by keyword, subjects, letter or even the Dewey Decimal number.
The Awesome Library: www.awesomelibrary.org has over 37,000 child-safe educational resources and a homework helper feature.
Wolfram Alpha: http://www.wolframalpha.com/ is a computational knowledge based search engine. It can answer questions, do math calculations, get facts, perform conversions, display graphics, help with homework and more. Type your question into the search box and it will use its knowledge base and logarithms to provide an answer.
